Augsburg OpenVPN Setup for Windows Users

Before you begin - check your computer to see if OpenVPN is installed. Click the start button and look for OpenVPN (or type OpenVPN to search). If the application isn’t found, use the installation instructions below. If you have OpenVPN installed please skip ahead to configuring the VPN.

Installing OpenVPN

  1. Visit kbox.augsburg.edu
  2. Sign in with your Augsburg username and password
    Note: Hardware token users only enter “password,passcode”
  3. Click Downloads
  4. Search for “VPN”
  5. Click on OpenVPN
  6. In the Device to instal software on dropdown choose the name of the computer you are using
  7. Click Run Now
  8. Wait a few minutes for the installation to initiate and complete.
  9. Log out of your computer and log back in again.

Configuring OpenVPN

  1. Visit https://remote-portal.augsburg.edu/ 
  2. Sign in with your Augsburg username and password
  3. You’ll receive an authentication request in your Duo Mobile app on your phone. Approve this login request.
  4. Click Remote Access
  5. Click the third download button next to “Click here to download the configuration file to set up SSL VPN on Linux, MacOS X, BSD or Solaris.”
  6. The file will download to your computer (if prompted to save the file, choose to save it)
  7. From the Start menu launch OpenVPN (or OpenVPN GUI)
  8. Click OK on the “No readable connection profile” prompt
  9. In the system tray (near the clock), right-click on the OpenVPN icon and choose Import file…
  10. Find the file you just downloaded (likely in your downloads folder) and choose Open
  11. Click OK on the File imported successfully prompt.
  12. In the system tray (near the clock), right-click on the OpenVPN icon and choose Connect

    Note: if you are prompted to enter an administrative password please log out of your computer and log back in again.
  13. Enter your Augsburg Username and Password

    Note: Hardware token users only enter “password,passcode”
  14. Do NOT ‘save password’
    If you save your password the VPN may try to connect on its own, including when the computer is asleep, meaning that you will get Duo Mobile authentication requests even though you haven’t tried to sign in. This can also lead to Duo account lockouts.
  15. Click OK
  16. On your phone look for the Duo Mobile authentication request notification and choose Approve
